William (Bill) Hohns, W’74, and his wife, Kathlene (Kathie), developed the Penn Class Tree program to help instill a deeper connection to trees on Penn’s campus, and to help freshmen make a meaningful first connection with the Morris Arboretum. Bill says "the program is simple, both in its concept and execution. Without significant staff cost to the University or Arboretum, through the placement of distinctive trees over time, the appearance of campus can be dramatically influenced while building pride for each class.”
Each year, the Arboretum, in consultation with the University Landscape Architect, provides the incoming freshman class with a choice of three specimen trees, which the students then vote on, choosing their favorite tree. By engaging the expertise of Morris Arboretum, the class is assured that species and long term care is carefully considered. The Arboretum also works closely with the Penn Traditions program to encourage student participation and facilitate the voting process. Bill and Kathie also support the Arboretum through the ESCAPE program, which encourages students to venture off campus and visit the Arboretum throughout the year.
