DESCRIPTION Sweet cherry is native to Europe, Northern Africa, and Southwestern Asia, where it has been cultivated since ancient times. Sweet cherry cultivars, employed by the agriculture industry, are derived from this species. The straight species has smaller fruits. Aside from its delicious fruits, sweet cherry tree stands out with its gray-brown bark with long, horizontal lenticels. Oblong to ovate leaves are surrounded by unequally serrate margins. Like humans, birds also relish the fruits, as the species name "avium" is Latin for bird.
