FAMILY | Magnoliaceae (Magnolia Family) |
DESCRIPTION |
The star magnolia is one of the earliest magnolias to flower with slightly fragrant, white to light pink flowers appearing in late March and early April. These small trees grow slowly, reaching up to 20 feet tall, and exhibit a rounded crown covered with blooms. They are planted throughout campus, the most recent additions being a grouping in Penn's pollinator garden near 38th and Spruce Streets. Morris Arboretum staff grew these magnolias from seed wild-collected along streams on the island of Honshu, Japan, bringing new populations to the Americas as part of the arboretum's long tradition of worldwide plant exploration. Their partnership with Penn provides us with interesting, wild-collected tree specimens to beautify our campus. Full sun to part shade; Average water requirements. Hardiness Zones 4-8 |
