red maple

Title Image

Acer rubrum

FAMILY Sapindaceae (Soapberry Family)
DESCRIPTION Also known as red maple, Acer rubrum is adored for its vibrant colors in the fall. The leaves turn from dark green to brilliant red. Because of this, their soil, and relative pollution tolerance, they make a popular landscaping tree. However, not all red maples have red leaves. In fact any nursery boasting so is committing fraud. The colors differ from tree to tree with some even remaining green for the entire year. Despite the leaf variance, most trees have red clusters of flowers, properly earning the species its common name. Due to its popularlity, dozens of cultivars exist in attempts to perfect the red foliage and pollution tolerance.
