For centuries, flowering cherries have been cultivated in Japan, where the trees hold both cultural and aesthetic value. Their long history of cultivation obfuscates the hybrid origin and parentage of Yoshino cherry. Whatever its exact parentage, Yoshino cherry is famous for its beautiful flowers. Horizontal branches form a round or vase-shaped crown, while the bark is marked with prominent horizontal lenticels. Washington D.C. hosts the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which features Yoshino cherries all along the Tidal Basin. At Penn, College Green features Yoshino cherry Full sun to part shade; Average water requirements. Hardiness Zones 5-8 Importing exotic ornamental species is quite controversial today, but less so in the past.
