live oak
Quercus virginiana
FAMILY |
Fagaceae (Beech Family) |
DESCRIPTION |
Live oak, unlike many other oak species, is a long living evergreen tree with a short trunk but large crown reaching up to 80 feet in hieght. Often blanketed in Spanish moss, these trees became staples of old plantations and therefore a symbolic tree representing South's (United States) heritage. The tree, though large and domineering, has small insiginificant flowers that develop into 1 inch long acorns with scaly cups. Though these trees are considered iconic and even maintainence free in their native range, they face many problems farther north.
Full sun; Tolerates wet to medium water conditions.
